I’m home for Thanksgiving break, which means I don’t have classes but still have tons of homework. It also means the fall sports season (at least at the Division III level) has wrapped up. Denison football finished 8-2, the best mark in three decades. I covered the team all season for the Denisonian, which made me the Chris Mortensen of Big Red Football.
When school resumes, it’ll be basketball season, and I’ll be covering the men’s team for the paper. For now, here are links to all of my game stories for football season. The paper doesn’t publish every week, so some games won’t be here.
Similar to Will Leitch’s weekly newsletter, I’m also going to *attempt* to be objective about my work.
Week 3 – A Destruction of Oberlin – It’s a great school, but they are not good at sports. Tough to write about a blowout with a word count.
Week 5 – O-who? – I worked the live stats for this game. Baird always gets a lot of tackles, but none of us in the press box realized just how many he had until after the game. I thought the quotes I got in this one were pretty good.
Week 6 – Hiram Comeback – This was the first (and last) road game I attended in person in my four years. I went home for the first two games of the ALDS on Thursday and Friday before going to this game on Saturday. It was about 45 degrees outside but I wore shorts. And my dad won the 50/50 raffle, so we made money going to the game. I thought the quote from Sernus was phenomenal (his always are) and I teased the Wittenberg game pretty well. Speaking of which…
Week 7 – Historic Witt Win – A historic victory deserves a well-written game story. I got a lot of quotes and felt the drama of the game was captured well. Plus, it was the front-page lead story, which was awesome because I saw my name as soon as I picked up the paper.
Week 9 – Undefeated No More – It’s a simple lead, but it works. I tried to make it more about DePauw getting the win than Denison taking the L, despite it being an ugly performance from the Big Red. Another good quote from Sernus. He makes me look like a smarter writer.
Week 10 – Senior Day/Wabash Loss – It’s tough playing from behind. I thought I set the scene pretty well, blowing up the balloon before letting the air out with a single word. Tough loss on senior day.
Editorial – Butthurt Indians Fan? – For the same issue, I wrote a short editorial about the World Series. It was probably the best baseball game I will ever see in my lifetime, and I’m really glad I was able to attend it with my father. In the story, I was able to get a dig in against Aroldis Chapman, which is probably the best single moment from anything I wrote in the fall. Can’t wait until March.
Week 11 – Season Finale – Good quotes, good storylines, and a good end to the season. I’m proud of this one. Aside from the Witt story, I think this is my best game story of the season.
That’s it for football season. I’ll have another post this week with all of my podcast reviews from the last few months.
