Google NBA mock draft and you get over 15 million results, with an attempted mock from every site imaginable. Instead of adding to that pile, I am only going to predict who the Cavs might pick with the picks they currently own. I will also detail who I believe is the biggest sleeper and biggest bust in this draft class, though only time will tell if these predictions come true.
#1 – Jabari Parker
Parker is more NBA-ready and he can play either forward position. Even though he supposedly tanked his Cavs workout, he’ll be forced to play hard once he’s taken with the top pick. In all honesty, I believe the Cavs will trade down because they aren’t in love with either Parker or Wiggins. GM David Griffin could gain assets by trading down while still keeping open the possibility of drafting Joel Embiid.
33 – Thanasis Antetokounmpo
I am a huge fan of the Greek Freak up in Milwaukee, and I think his brother will become a solid bench option as a rookie. Giannis Antetokounmpo exceeded all expectations as a rookie, and though his brother is not as talented or lanky, Thanasis has the potential to become a solid NBA player. He spent last season in the D-League and got better as the season went along, averaging 18.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in the last ten games of the season while playing on a terrible Delaware 87ers team that wasn’t trying tank.
Biggest Sleeper – Shabazz Napier
There are very few players who take advantage of four college seasons, especially at “Big Six” schools, but Napier has done so. Napier is a legitimate shooting and scoring threat who elevated his play and his team’s play to a new level in leading UConn to an NCAA Championship. He’s undersized, but his gritty style of play and work ethic will help him to succeed at the next level. I consider Napier a rich man’s Norris Cole and a player who will be a major steal if he goes outside of the lottery.
Biggest Bust – Marcus Smart
If people’s professions and talents matched their names, Josh Outman would still be with the Indians, Grant Balfour would not be in baseball, and O.J. Mayo would be working at Subway. Marcus Smart, based on his last name, should have a high basketball IQ. Based on his poor shooting percentages, especially from beyond the arc, it concerns me that Smart continues to launch bricks. No NBA team needs a brick layer and Smart will not have a successful NBA career unless he learns how to shoot the ball.
No one can predict the future, but all of the NBA mock draft coverage leads fans to believe otherwise. I’ll be live tweeting the draft if you want to follow along. If you have your own thoughts on who the Cavs should draft or you think I’m crazy, let me know in the comments section or @NSF_Alex.
